Beng Mealea
About Beng Mealea
A sprawling 12th-century temple about 60 km east of town, left almost entirely unrestored — collapsed galleries, moss, and jungle. Wooden walkways let you clamber through what Ta Prohm looked like before the crowds.
Why we love it
This is the Indiana Jones temple. Combine it with Koh Ker or the Kulen waterfalls for the best day trip out of Siem Reap.
Good to Know
Do I need an Angkor Pass to visit Beng Mealea?
Yes — every temple in the Angkor Archaeological Park checks the Angkor Pass ($37 one day, $62 three days, $72 seven days), including the outer sites. Buy it at the official ticket center or online before you head out; it is not sold at the temples themselves.
Is there a dress code at Beng Mealea?
Shoulders and knees must be covered at all Angkor temples, and the rule is enforced strictly at upper terraces such as the Bakan level of Angkor Wat and the Phnom Bakheng summit. Wear light covering layers; a scarf draped over shoulders is not accepted.
How do I get to Beng Mealea?
It sits in the countryside well north/east of town — plan on a tuk-tuk (~$25–35 for the longer day), a car with driver (~$50–60), or a guided day tour. Most visitors pair the trip with the Cambodia Landmine Museum.
What are the opening hours of Beng Mealea?
Daily 7:00am–5:30pm. Hours are set by the park authority and can change for ceremonies; sunrise-viewing temples open earliest.
