Border status checked 22 October 2026. There is no Siem Reap to Bangkok bus you can take right now. The Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Berlin lists every Cambodia–Thailand land checkpoint as physically closed until further notice. The table is dated 3 October 2026, and the notice underneath it says all land border crossings between Cambodia and Thailand remain closed until further notice. The way to Bangkok is a flight from Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport (SAI). When a nonstop is operating, the airborne time is about 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. Check the airline for the day’s flights and the fare. Do not buy an overland ticket that promises to drive you across at Poipet.
Is the Poipet border open? (2026 status)
Poi Pet, in Banteay Meanchey, is the checkpoint people mean when they talk about a Siem Reap to Bangkok bus or a train connection at Aranyaprathet. On the embassy list it is marked X. The legend on that page says X means the border crossing is physically closed until further notice. The same mark is on the other Thailand posts in the table: Cham Yeam (Koh Kong), Chorm (Oddar Meanchey), Daung (Kamrieng, Battambang), Prom (Pailin), and O Smach (Oddar Meanchey). This is not a Poipet-only closure. It is every land crossing with Thailand that the embassy is publishing.
That is still the public position of the Cambodian side as of the 3 October 2026 list. On the Thai side, Nation Thailand reported on 1 June 2026 that the government denied social-media claims the Aranyaprathet checkpoint would reopen for Cambodian students. The spokesperson said no such order had been issued, and the Sa Kaeo governor said the Ban Khlong Luek–Poipet crossing, and the other checkpoints in the province, had not reopened. The same report says Thailand closed land crossings to most travellers, including tourists and traders, in June 2025. We are not printing a specific start day, because the embassy page and the UK advice we checked do not give one.
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office travel advice for Cambodia was still current on 22 October 2026 (updated 19 March 2026). It says land borders and crossings between Cambodia and Thailand continue to be suspended. It also advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of the land border with Thailand, and it notes heavy fighting along parts of that border in 2025, including airstrikes, rockets, and artillery, with a ceasefire signed on 27 December. Some border temples, including Preah Vihear, are closed. None of that is a reason to test a side road around Poipet. If your plan was to stand at the border and hope, change the plan.
Read the embassy list again in the week you travel. A closure “until further notice” can change without this page updating the same hour. Until that list shows Poi Pet as open, treat every bus, minivan, or taxi that says it will take you from Siem Reap into Thailand as a trip that stops at a shut gate.
Flights from Siem Reap to Bangkok
The carrier we could confirm on its own website is Air Cambodia. On 22 October 2026 its booking form, with the origin set to Siem Reap (SAI), includes “Bangkok - Suvarnabumi (BKK)” in the destination list. That is Suvarnabhumi, the main Bangkok airport. The airline’s own spelling on the form drops an h. The code is BKK.
We could not open a dated timetable on Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways, or AirAsia. Those sites either blocked the request or did not show a Siem Reap–Bangkok schedule we could read. Because of that, this page does not print flight numbers, departure clocks, or a weekly frequency. Do not trust a third-party schedule screenshot for a same-week departure. Search SAI to BKK on the airline you intend to fly, and book from that result.
What we can say about time, if a nonstop is the flight you find: about 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes in the air. That is the usual block for this city pair, not a departure we copied off a board. Fares move every day. Check the airline. We are not printing a price.
Bangkok has two airports that matter for connections. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is the one Air Cambodia lists from SAI. Don Mueang (DMK) is the other Bangkok airport, often used by low-cost carriers. We could not confirm a SAI–DMK flight on an airline site on 22 October 2026, so do not assume your onward Asia flight at Don Mueang has a same-ticket hop from Siem Reap. If a search result offers DMK, confirm the carrier and the terminal before you book a tight connection. Changing airports in Bangkok is a ground transfer, not a walk across a terminal.
The airport code you type is SAI. Air Cambodia’s form uses SAI for Siem Reap, not the old code travellers still type from memory. Give yourself the same cushion you would for any international departure. Our airport guide says to leave town 2.5 to 3 hours before an international flight, because the airport is about 40 km east of town and the drive is roughly 45 minutes to an hour.
Getting to Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport (SAI)
SAI opened in late 2023 and replaced the old airport that sat about ten minutes from Pub Street. The new terminal is about 40 km east of town. There is no train and no useful public bus for visitors. The practical options are a hotel car, a pre-booked transfer, a ride-hailing app if cars are actually waiting, or a long tuk-tuk that is a poor idea with luggage. The airport guide ranks those choices and explains why a 5pm flight means a pickup around 2pm.
Build the last morning around that drive. A sunrise at the temples can still work if the flight is later in the day. A same-day Banteay Srei run plus an afternoon departure usually does not. If Bangkok is the next city, use the last Siem Reap day for town: the market, a meal, and a bag that is already packed. The 4-day itinerary is the version of the trip that leaves a last day unhurried, and the temple guides are where to decide what you still want to see before you fly.
Flying Bangkok to Siem Reap (the reverse trip)
The same Air Cambodia booking form lists Siem Reap (SAI) as a destination when the origin is Bangkok (BKK). So the airline is selling the city pair in both directions in its search, not a one-way outbound only. The same limits apply: no flight numbers on this page, no fares, and the same “about 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes” airborne range when the flight you find is nonstop. Search it on the airline.
Landing at SAI is an airport entry. It is not the closed Poipet land post. Sort the Cambodia visa before you rely on a same-day temple plan. The Cambodia visa guide covers the tourist e-visa, visa on arrival, and the e-Arrival card. Do that paperwork before you are standing in the arrival hall with a sunrise pickup already booked.
From the airport you still have the 40 km into town. A private car meets you at SAI and drops you at the hotel. This arrival transfer is the one product worth comparing if you do not want to negotiate after a flight:
The listing is a private transfer from Siem Reap Airport to a hotel, run by Angkor Cab-Off Beaten Truck. On 22 October 2026 Viator showed a 5.0 rating from 17 reviews and a from-price of $50. The options on the product are a Lexus SUV, a sedan (Toyota Camry), a Hyundai Starex, a Toyota Hiace, and a Toyota Alphard, with the driver meeting you at the SAI arrival gate. The published duration varies from 60 to 75 minutes, which matches the airport road rather than a Poipet run. It is not a border crossing, and it does not continue to Thailand. If your hotel already includes a pickup, use that and skip the card.
What about the bus or train?
Older guides still describe a minivan or bus from Siem Reap to Poipet, a walk or a ride across to Aranyaprathet, and then a Thai bus or train onward to Bangkok. That chain needs an open checkpoint. Poi Pet is closed. The Thai reports from June 2026 say Aranyaprathet had not been reopened. A ticket that gets you as far as the Cambodian side of a shut gate is not a ticket to Bangkok.
We are not printing bus times, bus fares, or the old Poipet transfer prices. Those services are not a way through while the embassy mark is X. If a seller still lists an overland Siem Reap–Bangkok seat, ask them which open checkpoint they will use. If they say Poipet, they are describing a crossing the embassy says is physically closed.
There is also no train from Siem Reap to Bangkok. Royal Railway’s passenger service is inside Cambodia, with departures from Phnom Penh, not from the Thai network. A Thai train that used to connect toward the border still cannot hand you to a Cambodian train at a closed post. When the embassy list changes, re-read it and then look up whoever is actually selling the crossing. Until then, fly.
Alternatives to Bangkok
If the point of the trip was simply to leave Siem Reap for a city, Phnom Penh is the open road. The Siem Reap to Phnom Penh guide compares the bus, the flight, a private car, and the seasonal boat. From Phnom Penh you can look again at flights to Bangkok on the same airlines, with a different airport at the Cambodian end. That is a longer day than a direct SAI–BKK hop, and it only makes sense if you wanted the capital anyway.
If Bangkok was a default “next city” and the border closure has scrambled the route, the better use of the days you still have is to finish Siem Reap properly. A full temple circuit, a slower last afternoon in town, and a flight you have actually checked on the airline will beat a bus ticket to a closed gate. Check the embassy page once more on the morning you would have travelled overland. If Poi Pet is still X, go to the airport.
FAQ
Is there a bus from Siem Reap to Bangkok right now?
No. The Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Berlin lists every Cambodia–Thailand land checkpoint, including Poi Pet, as physically closed until further notice. The list is dated 3 October 2026. With those posts closed, there is no bus you can board in Siem Reap and ride through to Bangkok.
How long is the flight from Siem Reap to Bangkok?
Air Cambodia’s booking search offers Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport (BKK) from Siem Reap (SAI). On 22 October 2026 we could not confirm individual flight numbers on an airline timetable. When a nonstop is operating, plan on about 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes in the air, then check the airline for that day’s schedule and fare.
Which Bangkok airport do flights use?
Air Cambodia’s Siem Reap booking list names Suvarnabhumi (BKK). Bangkok’s other main airport is Don Mueang (DMK). We could not confirm a SAI–DMK timetable on an airline’s own site on 22 October 2026, so check the carrier before you plan a connection at Don Mueang.
Can I take the train from Bangkok to Siem Reap?
Not while the land border is closed. A train that ends on the Thai side of the border cannot continue into Cambodia at Poi Pet. Royal Railway’s passenger trains run inside Cambodia from Phnom Penh. They are not a service from Bangkok. Check the embassy checkpoint list again before you travel, in case the closure changes.
How far is the airport from Siem Reap town?
Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport (SAI) is about 40 km east of town, roughly 45 minutes to an hour by car. The old airport beside town is not the one you fly from now. The airport guide covers the transfer options.
Do I need a Cambodia visa flying in from Bangkok?
Flying into SAI is an airport arrival, which is separate from the closed land checkpoints. Read the Cambodia visa guide for the tourist e-visa, visa on arrival, and the e-Arrival card before you leave Bangkok.
Checkpoint status, airline schedules, and fares change. The border note above was checked on 22 October 2026 against the Cambodian embassy list and the UK travel advice. Confirm both again before you travel, and book the flight on the airline’s own site.
