Siem Reap to Battambang is a straightforward road trip: Giant Ibis lists it as 161 km and 3 hours, with the bus leaving from behind the Old Stadium on Khmer Pub Street. You can also hire a private car for the same sort of drive, or join a day tour that picks you up at the hotel, rides the bamboo train, and waits for the bats at Phnom Sampeau. A boat exists only when the Tonlé Sap is high enough, and we could not find a sailing to book for this month. There is no scheduled flight in Air Cambodia’s airport list.

By bus

Giant Ibis is the operator whose own route page we could read on 22 October 2026. The distance field says 161 km. The duration field says 3 hours. The departure point is the Giant Ibis terminal behind the Old Stadium, Khmer Pub Street. If you are not using the pickup, the page asks you to arrive 30 minutes before departure. Complimentary pickup is offered for passengers staying at partner hotels. On the road, the first stop is about 100 km from Siem Reap, a 10-minute halt at the PTT gas station in Sisophon, Banteay Meanchey. You arrive at the Giant Ibis terminal on Road No. 3 in Krong Battambang, where tuk-tuks wait.

We are not printing a clock time or a fare. The route page does not list an 8:30 or 13:30 departure, and it does not show a ticket price. Book on Giant Ibis and read the departure they offer for your date. We also did not confirm other companies on their own sites, so this page names Giant Ibis only.

The route page’s “relax and enjoy the scenery” paragraph lists provinces that are not the Sisophon corridor. Trust the stop it names, Sisophon, and the 161 km / 3 hour figures. Ignore a province list that does not match that stop.

By private car or taxi

A private car does the same highway with room to stop. The transfer below is listed in both directions, with hotel pickup, and a published window of about 3 to 4 hours. On 22 October 2026 Viator showed it at 4.9 from 32 reviews, from $70, under the operator Siem Reap Shuttle. Vehicle options on the listing are a 3-seater, a 6-seater minivan, and a 10-seater. The web address still contains an old Banteay Srei tour name. The product title and description are the Battambang transfer, and the code in the link is 56250P15. Open it and check the title before you pay.

Use the car if there are three or four of you, or if you want a break that a bus will not make. Use the bus if you want a fixed seat and you are happy to be dropped at the Road No. 3 terminal. We left off a second taxi listing that had only four reviews.

By boat (seasonal)

A boat between Siem Reap and Battambang runs only when the water is high enough to use. We could not find an operator page with a sailing, a clock time, or a fare for October 2026 dates, so none of those appear here. Treat any “boat tomorrow” claim as something to confirm in person, not as a plan you can lock before you arrive. The Tonlé Sap guide explains why the lake rises and falls through the year, which is the reason this route disappears in the low-water months. If someone quotes you a boat, ask which landing they use and what happens if the level is too low that week.

Battambang as a day trip from Siem Reap

Most people who search this route are not moving house to Battambang. They want the bamboo train and the bats, and they want to sleep back in Siem Reap. That is a real product, and it is a long day. The private tour below is listed at 15 hours. Hotel pickup is included. You are in a car or van for the highway, then a tuk-tuk around the sights. Do not stack it on a sunrise Angkor morning.

Two listings were still the day trip when we checked them on 22 October 2026. The first is private, from Adventure Travel Co.: 4.9 from 104 reviews, from $132.31. It includes private transport, water, entry fees, snacks, and lunch, plus an English-speaking guide, and it picks up from Siem Reap hotels. The operator’s description sends you through villages and plantations, onto the bamboo train, up the 365 steps at Wat Banan, into the Killing Caves, and to the Phnom Sampeau bat caves for sunset. The listing says the bats leave at sunset and uses the word “millions.” That is the operator’s description, not a count we verified. It is not recommended for pregnant travellers or for anyone with poor cardiovascular health, and it asks for a moderate level of fitness.

The second is from Green Era Travel: a small group, maximum 8, rated 4.96 from 52 reviews, from $129. The description says the drive is just three hours, then Ek Phnom, a rice-paper factory, Psar Nat market, the governor’s residence, the bamboo train, and Phnom Sampeau for the sunset bats. The price includes the small group, an English-speaking guide, a shared air-conditioned car or minivan, the bamboo train, water, entrance fees, and hotel pickup and drop-off. Meals are excluded. The listing says the small-group option departs at 7:30 am. Its pickup windows are not consistent, so confirm your pickup time with the operator. The web address still says “2-Days-Taste-of-Battambang.” The title and the description are the day trip. Check that title on the page before you book. Viator’s slug has not caught up with the product.

For a wider look at days out of Siem Reap that are not Battambang, the day trips guide covers Beng Mealea, Kulen, and the usual Angkor add-ons. Multi-day temple trips live under multi-day tours. Battambang sits next to those, not inside the Angkor Pass.

The bamboo train (norry) today

The bamboo train is a light platform on a small engine, a norry, and on these tours it is a short ride. It is not how you travel from Siem Reap to Battambang, and it is not the old improvised line that used to share the railway with scheduled trains. What the current tours do not agree on is the exact track. Some describe a ride in the Banan area. Others point at a site near O Dambong. The photo on this page is the Banan train. Confirm which track your tour uses when you book, and do not treat a filename or a blog post as the day’s location. We could not confirm a standalone ticket price on an official page, so there isn’t one here. On the tours above, the ride is included in the tour price.

Phnom Sampeau and the bat cave

Both day tours end at Phnom Sampeau for the bats at sunset. The private tour also includes the Killing Caves and a viewpoint with the guide, after Wat Banan. That is as far as the product descriptions go, and it is as far as this page goes. We are not adding a history of the caves beyond the fact that the tour calls them the Killing Caves, and we are not adding a time for the bats beyond “at sunset” on those listings. If you go independently, check the same sites the tour names and leave time for the 365 steps at Wat Banan if you want that stop too.

Battambang is also where Phare, the Cambodian Circus comes from. The performers train at Phare Ponleu Selpak, the arts school in Battambang, and the Siem Reap show is the school’s social enterprise. You can see the circus in Siem Reap without making this trip. The school is the reason the town’s name shows up on that page.

Onward from Battambang

If Battambang is a stop on the way to the capital, you have a bus and a train, both of which we could confirm on the operator’s own site, without a fare.

Giant Ibis between Phnom Penh and Battambang lists 288 km and 4.5 hours. The Phnom Penh terminal is on Street 106 at the Night Market. Partner hotels get a pickup. The page lists a 10-minute stop about 180 km from Phnom Penh at the PTT station in Pursat. It does not list a clock time or a price, so we don’t either. The road comparison with Siem Reap, including the flight and the seasonal boat, is in the Siem Reap to Phnom Penh guide. That guide is about the Siem Reap–Phnom Penh trip, not a through ticket via Battambang.

Royal Railway is the passenger train. It says it is the only train service in Cambodia, with two lines leaving Phnom Penh. Its Northern Line runs between Phnom Penh, Pursat, and Battambang. We are not printing a departure time, an arrival time, or a fare, because the official page we read does not show the prices and clocks that third-party sites quote. Booking phones on the railway site are +855 78 888 582 and +855 78 888 583. The train does not start in Siem Reap. To use it you are already in Battambang, or you are coming up from Phnom Penh.

FAQ

How long is the bus from Siem Reap to Battambang?

Giant Ibis lists the route as 161 km and 3 hours. The bus leaves from its terminal behind the Old Stadium, on Khmer Pub Street. The same page lists a 10-minute stop at the PTT station in Sisophon, about 100 km from Siem Reap.

Is there a boat from Siem Reap to Battambang?

Only when the water is high enough. We could not find a published sailing or a fare to print for October 2026. Ask locally a day or two ahead, and read the Tonlé Sap guide for why the lake level changes through the year.

Can you do Battambang as a day trip from Siem Reap?

Yes. Tours pick up at Siem Reap hotels and visit the bamboo train and Phnom Sampeau. The private full-day listing is 15 hours, so it is a long day with an early start, not a morning outing.

Is the bamboo train still running?

Day tours from Siem Reap still include a short bamboo-train ride. It is a sightseeing ride, not transport between the two cities. Listings do not agree which track you ride, so confirm the site with the operator. We are not printing a ticket price.

Is there a flight to Battambang?

Battambang is not among the airports in Air Cambodia’s booking list. We could not find a scheduled flight to plan around. Use the bus or a private car.

Should I take the bus or a private car?

Giant Ibis quotes 3 hours for the bus and offers a pickup from partner hotels. A private transfer is the same kind of drive with the car to yourself. The transfer we checked is listed at about 3 hours, from $70. Take the bus for a simple seat. Take the car if you want to stop on the way or you are splitting the fare.

Bus details were read on giantibis.com on 22 October 2026. The train route is from Royal Railway’s passenger page the same day. Tour ratings, review counts, and from-prices are Viator’s figures the same day. Confirm the departure you want when you book.
